Writing Prompt Wheel
The wheel is preloaded with 16 open-ended story starters, and one spin picks the writing prompt that opens your next draft.
Turn a prompt into a writing session
- Set the rules first
Choose a time limit, word target, or point of view before spinning so the prompt cannot be second-guessed.
- Spin and open strong
Write your first sentence within a minute of the spin, before doubt argues back.
- Draft now, judge later
Keep writing until you hit your limit, and save all editing for afterward.
Tip: If a prompt stalls the session, allow one re-spin or combine two results into a more specific challenge.
Story starters that leave room for your ideas
Every preset prompt describes an event and stops there: no named characters, no genre, no required ending. A nine-year-old turns the same spin into a silly adventure; an adult builds quiet literary fiction from it. If a result feels too vague, sharpen it with one constraint, such as a narrator who cannot be trusted.
Teachers often need a themed list instead, such as mystery openers or persuasive topics. Type your own prompts over the preset and save the list to My Wheels, which keeps it in this browser. A downloaded .wheel file moves the list to another device.
Ways to use a story prompt
Pick a clear constraint so a broad idea becomes a manageable piece of writing.
- Practice Timed freewriting: Write continuously for five or ten minutes and follow whichever detail becomes interesting.
- Classroom Shared starting points: Give every student the same result, then compare how differently their stories develop.
- Groups Collaborative stories: Let each writer add a section before another spin introduces the next plot change.

Common questions
What if the wheel lands on a prompt we already used?
Turn on auto remove winner; each chosen prompt then leaves the wheel, so a class works through the set without repeats.
Can I build my own prompt list?
Yes. Edit any entry or paste a whole new set; the wheel holds up to 2,000 prompts.
